Must Love Dogs (2005)

I have been curious to watch this romantic comedy for some time now. I've also been told it's horrible. Since I usually like horrible things ( Zombie Strippers anyone?) I rented it. I'm also interested in viewing the majority of John Cusack's work. On a superficial girl point of view, I usually like his characters.
When I was going over this movie in my head last night I had formed a pros and cons list. It isn't a horrible movie, but it isn't half bad either. I will always admit that I have to like at least one of the characters in order to say I like the film.

Pros
I went though a period of liking and hating every character in the movie. I liked Sarah, except when she hurt Jake. I liked her dad except when he said he was just bidding his time till he died and leading these women who were looking for love on. I liked Jake except for when he started dating the stupid and the young. I never really liked the hot dad, oh yes Bobby, but really hated him at the end. When she broke his glasses I was left wonder what you do in an instance like that. Does he demand that she replace them or accept that he is a lying whore and move on. I eneded up liking Dolly, even though the initial introduction to her wasn't welcoming.

I liked the big Irish family dynamics and Sarah's collection of pajamas. One memorable quote was something like, you've progressed from wearing pajamas to wearing the bed, when she sat with her sisters in front of the fire warped in a bedspread.

Cons
If the movie consisted of only Jake's witty dialogue the movie would be golden. There is something about John Cusack that puts him up there with Woody Allen and Vince Vaughn on the scale of people I love to hear ramble and pontificate.

I hated the scenes with the butcher, they were way too corny. On that same note the end scene was a sickening cheese ball of a scene. I think the last good scene of the movie was when her father met Jake by chance outside of the coffee shop.

Why is John Cusack still wearing Lloyd Dobler's coat?
